Late one night he woke up with severe back pain, barely able to stand. After a week at the hospital, he was diagnosed with Streptococcus gordonii (Strep infection) in his blood which had caused an abscess on his spine. He couldn't walk or even move without extreme pain. In addition to the abscess, the blood infection also caused damage to his mitral valve which resulted in a full valve replacement requiring open heart surgery. He suffered a variety of secondary issues including some mini strokes in his brain, a fractured rib during the surgery and C diff.

Although he is living independently again, the recovery process has been long and being out of work for almost 6 months has taken a toll on his finances. In addition to his battle for recovery it is going to be a struggle to pay off $9,839 of medical bills.

In the days following surgery, we practiced daily gratitudes to stay positive. One day he replied "I'm grateful to be on the right side of the dirt" which gave us the idea for the original shirt design and to start this store called "In The Fight".

Our hope is that these designs will bring inspiration to others that are in their own fight.
